Sometime in the late 1970s I was taking the Amtrak Metroliner from Philadelphia to New York. I got on the train and sat down next to a guy who got on a little before me. After a couple of minutes I noticed I was sitting next to Bill Cosby. I said hello. He said hello back. I said “you’re a very funny fellow” (the title of one of his early albums). He laughed and said thank you. After a minute or so of not talking I leaned over and whispered “I bet you’re dying to ask me for my autograph.” He cracked up.

  1. Now THAT is funny!

  2. Sweet. I’ve always wondered if he’d be approachable. I’ve always enjoyed his work and just listening to him talk on news shows and such. He can go from silly and funny to thoughtful and serious and back so fast.

  3. I saw him talking to Al Roker on the outdoor set of the Today Show in the middle of winter. When the cameras were off Bill said to Al, “Oh, I get it! You’re out here in the cold! They let all the white people stay inside!”
