Kurt Vonnegut
I’ve had occasion to meet a lot of notable musicians. More on those folks at some other time. I guess some of them changed my life in small ways and large. But while walking from gig to gig in NYC a few years back I met a man who had a crucial role in adjusting my whole world view. I mean his impact on me was life changing…consciousness bending. . A literary lifetime dose of LSD. His name is Kurt Vonnegut. Author of books so profound to my world view as to be scriptural . Holy books. And there walking up 2nd Ave with a video tape in his hand, about to stop into the Blockbuster or whatever ,was the man himself. Now , usually I’d leave your average celebrity alone. Maybe just cast a friendly glance..or say hello. But I had to have a more meaningful encounter with a soul so vital to my very existence . On the other hand , I certainly didn’t want to frighten the dear old sage. The sight of a moose like me gallumphing toward him could have been taken the wrong way. So I decided to vector toward him at a casual pace. It worked! Our paths intersected just in front of the store and in as calm a voice as I could muster given my excitement , I said “Hello Mr. Vonnegut , I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed reading your books. When can we expect another?”
“When Hell freezes over” he said and dived for the video store door. It couldn’t have gone better.
