Tim Russert

tim_russertAfter many years of being a fan of Meet The Press and Tim Russert, I ran across an article announcing that Tim would be the speaker at the 2008 Mary and Louis Fusco Distinguished Lecture at Southern Connecticut State University on April 9th 2008.

There was an opportunity to attend a reception prior to his appearance that included a photo session/meet and greet, autographed copy of his book “Big Russ and Me” and priority seating for the lecture.

What an opportunity!

As I waited in line I got more and more excited, watching Tim take as much time as possible within the limited time allotted. I approached Tim I thanked him and told him how much I enjoyed his work. As he shook my hand he said,”Good Luck to you.”

As I walked away I thought to myself why would he wish me luck? Usually it is the person who is meeting a celebrity that says something unusual and unexpected.

Five weeks later I was diagnosed with colon cancer. As I dealt with my illness and recovery, those words soon would became a great comfort.

A few weeks later Tim passed away and as I watched all the coverage, people constantly told stories how Tim was always concerned and inquired about everyone and their families. Although Tim did not know me or what my future held, his words will remain in my memory forever. That night is a one I will remember always. He was a true gentleman and will be missed dearly~
