Billy Joel
Walking through the airport several years back, my father and I were stopped, just waiting around, when we were approached by a man who says, “Your backpack is open.” Simple enough. Thank you. Then I realize who he looks like and we just start to make small-talk.
My father realizes too, and our suspicions are confirmed when he says his name is Bill. He can tell in the change in our tones that we know who he is. We start to ask what it’s like being him and he asks if we could not announce to everyone who he really is, as he is unnoticed by most others. We say, “Sure, it must be tough being so famous.”
Then, to ruin a great conversation about just life in general with Billy Joel, a stewardess says the classic, “Oh my God! Look everybody, it’s Billy Joel!” So he apologizes and says now he has to leave right away before he is completely swamped. No problem. An “I understand” would be in order, but then again, we really don’t.
