Jimmy Carter
Back during the latter part of Jimmy Carter’s term as President, I was lucky enough to be invited to the White House with industry leaders for a 1980 meeting .
We were first briefed on events in Iran and Afghanistan by National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, who had just returned an hour before from Kabul. After coffee “and” in the State dining room, we then returned to hear President Carter speak to us.
As he was leaving, the President stopped to shake my hand. Considering the heavy events about which we had just heard, I was so flabbergasted all I could say was “Good luck, Mr. President.” He replied, “I appreciate that” with a smile as he walked away. Didn’t work out, as he later lost his bid for re-election.
