Judy Garland
In 1961, I met Judy Garland in San Francisco, when she was making her Carnegie Hall concert tour. I had been a fan for many years, after seeing “A Star Is Born.”
Through her fan club, I learned she would be staying at the Fairmont Hotel. I joined a large group of other club members and we sat in the lobby all day, waiting for Judy to arrive. She never did.
Most of the others had jobs to go to, so the next day there were only two of us waiting for her. Then she arrived. Very tiny. I shook her hand and took her picture (I no longer have the photo, unfortunately) and got her autograph.
The other woman and I sat in the lobby excitedly reliving our brief encounter when, here comes Judy through the lobby again. She hadn’t liked her hotel room and was moving to another hotel. We got up to watch her get into a limousine and she turned, flashed us a smile and a big wave and drove off.
It was an experience that, nearly 50 years later, I still remember vividly.
