Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
So I’m attending meetings in Boston, staying as it turns out, at the same hotel as the Los Angeles Lakers.
It’s the 86-87 season and the NBA championship series, and the Celtics are on the ropes. Everyone is milling around the lobby and elevators looking for autographs, as the team bus is loading out front. To avoid the crowds, I headed around the back to an alternate bank of elevators. I’m standing alone as the door opens, and there’s Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
As my neck snaps up to look in Kareem’s face, Magic brushes by saying “no autographs” and bolts for the Lakers bus. Speechless, I just stare as Kareem slaps me on the shoulder, smiles and follows at a normal pace. Good memory.
