Karen Allen and Mary Chapin-Carpenter
I was living in Washington, D.C., in the 1980s, a few years after “Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark” came out. One of my favorite hangouts was a little Irish bar that had an open-mike night run by a friend, the then-unknown singer Mary Chapin-Carpenter.
I was at a table in the bar having a drink with Mary, when another of her friends came in – the actress Karen Allen. She sat down with us.
Of course, I knew that Karen Allen was not Indian Jones’ girlfriend Marion Ravenwood. But when I looked at Karen Allen, Marion Ravenwood was whom I saw.
I remember I was wearing a tan military-style shirt and a leather A-2 type bomber jacket. I wasn’t trying to be Indiana Jones, that’s how I dressed – and still dress.
I don’t recall anything at all about the conversation. All I remember is that for an evening, I allowed myself to almost imagine myself as Indiana Jones – while actually sitting across the table from Marion Ravenwood.

If you really knew Mary Chapin Carpenter even a little bit, I would think you would know that her last name is Carpenter; Chapin is her middle name and the first name of her father. Perhaps early on she allowed herself to be called just Mary, but these days she insists on being called Mary Chapin.
