The Bee Gees/Maurice Gibb
I have been a Bee Gees fan since I was 10 yrs old (I’m 45 now). My story is from several years ago, 1988.
My best friend and I were in New York City getting concert tickets for another artist (Rick Springfield) and we wanted the best seats, so we decided to sleep outside Radio City Music Hall for tickets the next day.
While there, we heard there was a party for Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary, being held at Madison Square Garden. We walked over to check it out. We saw a bunch of celebs that day, Phil Collins, John Stamos, Roberta Flack, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page and many, many others. I had also heard the Bee Gees were going to make an appearance, so I wasn’t going anywhere!
A long black limo pulls up and Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb stepped out and stopped to sign autographs. Barry and Robin were on our side of the walkway and Maurice was on the other side. Barry and Robin were very nice and signed my jacket and chatted a second. Maurice was chatting with fans on the other side, when a man came out to hurry them inside, as they were due to be on stage in a few minutes.
They all waved and started to go inside. I called to Maurice and begged him to sign one more autograph. “I promise I’ll catch you when we come out,” he told me. So we waited and a bunch of other celebs and recording bigwigs shuffled in and out.
Roberta Flack came back out and saw us still there and offered us her sandwich – this is 5 hours after she originally went in. LOL “You must be starving being out here for so long,” she said. We told her we went to Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee and got a bite to eat, but thanked her very much for her concern. Nice lady.
So the moment comes and the Bee Gees come back out, one at a time, and this time they aren’t stopping for autographs. Maurice is the last one out and as he stepped into the limo, I called out to him and reminded him that he “promised.” He flashed that great smile that they all have and he literally got out of the limo and came over to me and signed an autograph and said, “Here ya go, Luv.”
OMG, he was so sweet and went out of his way to keep his promise. I am still a huge fan of the Bee Gees and even though he is no longer with us, he left me with a great memory. RIP Mo!
